Harborview Research and Training Facility

Seattle, Washington is home to the multifunctional Harborview Research and Training Facility (HRT). Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington School of Medicine jointly run it. Conducting and encouraging research that enhances human health is the goal of the HRT.

Its objective is to become a preeminent hub for translational research, which is the process of turning new scientific understandings into innovative medical interventions and treatments.

A wide number of research fields are covered by the HRT, including:

  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Infectious diseases
  • Injury prevention
  • Mental health
  • Rehabilitation

History

A group of scientists who wished to establish a location where they could work together on research created the HRT in 1947. Initially, the institution was housed in a modest structure on the grounds of Harborview Medical Center. The HRT relocated to a new, bigger structure in 1999 that was created to accommodate contemporary research needs. The HRT is currently one of the top research centers in the Pacific Northwest as a result of years of growth and development.

Services and Facilities

To facilitate research, the HRT offers a range of facilities and services, including:

  • Wet laboratories
  • Dry laboratories
  • Tissue culture rooms
  • Shared facilities
  • Vivarium
  • Auditorium
  • Conference rooms
  • Training rooms
  • Library
  • Computing facilities

Additionally, the HRT provides researchers with a range of services, such as:

  • Technical help
  • Grant writing assistance
  • help for communication and outreach
  • Career development opportunities

Staff and Leadership

A director oversees the facility’s overall operations and is in charge of the HRT. A group of staff employees support the director by doing administrative, technical, and research tasks. A board of directors for the HRT also serves as an oversight and direction body.

Conferences and Events

Various conferences and events are held at the HRT, including:

Scientific meetings

  • Workshops
  • Training courses
  • Public talks

These gatherings give researchers the chance to network, discuss, and learn from one another’s research.

Funding

The HRT is supported by a number of different sources, such as:

  • Government funds
  • Individual donations
  • Corporate sponsorships.

No matter their financial sources, the HRT is committed to offering opportunities to all researchers.

Opportunities
